Dangerous Goods Class 4 contain Flammable Solids; Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion; Substances which, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable Gases. In this article you will be able to understand dangerous goods class 4 and know the hazmat labels for each division 4.1,4.2 and 4.3. In addition to, you will know the IATA CARGO IMP codes and examples for each division.
DG class 4 is divided into three divisions as follows:
Class No. | Division No. | Name of Division |
4 | 1 | Flammable Solids; Self-reactive Substances; and Desensitized Explosives |
4 | 2 | Substances liable to spontaneous combustion |
4 | 3 | Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases (Dangerous when wet) |
Dangerous Goods Class 4 | Division 4.1
Flammable Solids; Self-reactive Substances; and Desensitized Explosives
Solids which, under conditions encountered in transport, are readily combustible or may cause or contribute to fire through friction; self-reactive substances which are liable to undergo a strongly exothermic reaction; desensitized explosives which may explode if not diluted sufficiently.

Dangerous Goods Class 4 | Division 4.2
Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
Substances liable to spontaneous combustion. Substances, which are liable to spontaneous heating under normal conditions encountered in transport, or to heating up in contact with air, and being then liable to catch fire.
The following substances are classified in division 4.2:
# Pyrophoric substances
These substances are the most liable to spontaneous combustion. Pyrophoric substances ( liquid or solid) include mixtures and solutions are substances ignite within 5 minutes of coming in contact with air [ even in small quantities].
# Self-heating substances
Are substances which in contact with air without an additional energy supply are liable to self-heating [ only in large quantities – kilograms- and after long period of time – hours or days]

Dangerous Goods Class 4 | Division 4.3
Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases (Dangerous when wet).
Substances which by interaction with water, are liable to become spontaneously flammable or to give off flammable gases in dangerous quantities. Also, the term " water-reactive" is use.
